Coen: A Budding Chef

Cooking is fun, at least usually. It is one of those things that I enjoy immensely when I have time to focus on it and when I do not have kids clamoring at me while I am in the kitchen. I like to pour myself a glass of wine or sip on a beer while I cook, which makes the experience even more fun for me. Of course, it is rare that I get to really focus on my time in the kitchen anymore. This morning I did get to make my family brunch though! Not that it was difficult. I put a french toast casserole to "marinate" in the fridge overnight, and I baked the bacon, so really, it did not take much effort to create this meal. However, it was nice nonetheless.

As it turns out, my little Coen has taken an interest in cooking. If I am in the kitchen he insists on being right there beside me. He will push a chair up to the counter so that he can watch what I am doing closely. This is problematic when I am cooking on the stovetop, but otherwise it is fun to see him so curious about the creation of our meals.

In the last few of weeks he has become so interested in cooking that he has started spending a lot of time in the kitchen even when I am not in there. He used to just play with the pots and pans on the floor, but about a week ago he started playing with them on the stove. Since he figured out how to open the child proof stove knobs months ago, we have had to remove all of the knobs to keep him safe.

The knob removal is a small price to pay for the cuteness of seeing Coen carefully lifting the heavy pots and pans onto the stove, where he will spend hours each day pretending to create fabulous meals with ingredients like Fruit Loops, tortilla chips, fruit snacks, milk from his sippy cup, and salt and pepper, since they are the only spices within his reach.

It is my dream that Coen becomes a chef someday so that he will be able to keep me well fed in my twilight years!

ohmygod adorable! Except that you make me feel like a way less creative and...encouraging mom, since I just chase Monkey out with a spatula...
